Florida EMS Captain Dies While On-Duty

EUSTIS -- A long-time emergency medical services official died on duty early Friday morning. 

Capt. David Deland, 45, district chief for Lake-Sumter Emergency Medical Services, had worked a number of calls since Thursday, when he suffered cardiac arrest at his Eustis office sometime after 2:30 a.m. Friday. 

Deland worked for Lake-Sumter EMS since its inception on Oct. 1, 2000, and had worked as a paramedic and emergency medical technician before that. 

He began his career with the company as a field supervisor and was subsequently promoted to district chief.
